Ouidah — the Door of No Return
In Ouidah, on the Beninese coast, memory is not something you visit — it is something you feel. The Route of Slaves runs for nearly four kilometers, from the old auction square down to the shore, and ends at the Door of No Return, a monument raised facing the ocean.
Understanding the place
Ouidah was one of the great ports of the transatlantic slave trade. Today, with UNESCO's support, Benin has invested in preserving this history — a work of remembrance that speaks especially to the diaspora in search of its roots.
Practical

- How: Ouidah is about 40 km from Cotonou; a transfer is best arranged in advance.
